Hey Dems,
Although Spring Break is fast approaching, we have an action-packed schedule filled with speakers and lobbying before then.
Thursday is an especially exciting day. At 3:45, we will meet at Faunce with members of emPOWER and walk down to the State House to attend hearings in support of H5706, a bill that will place a cap on carbon emissions in Rhode Island. Showing your support can help ensure that this green legislation passes!
At 8:00, in Wilson 101, we will be hosting our Progressive Potpurri, where leaders from Ocean State Action and Fair Vote RI talk about the fight for universal health care and government reform. Pizza will be provided!
Then, on Monday, March 16 (location TBA), we will have our first legislative committee meeting to review the bills currently being debated at the State House and decide what issues we will lobby for. Help us set the Democrats' priorities!
Finally, on Thursday, March 12, at 8:00pm in Wilson 101, State Rep. Pacheco, the youngest member of the legislature, will speak about the work he is doing. You won't want to miss this dynamic speaker!
Yours Truly,
The Dems Board

Bubble Bill
As we mentioned in the last post, the Brown Democrats have written our very own bill, which we hope to introduce this legislative session! "The Bubble Bill" is based off a law in Colorado, but several other states, including Massachusetts, have passed similar legislation.
The bill seeks to protect the personal space of anyone going into a health clinic (eg. an abortion clinic) by providing a six-foot "bubble" between them and protesters. Protesters' rights to free speech are protected - you can easily talk to someone, display signs, or pass literature from six feet away - and patients and staff will have unobstructed access to health care facilities.
Last year, the state legislature considered, but did not pass, a bill creating a 100 foot buffer zone around a health clinic. We believe that bill sacrificed protesters' right to free speech for the safety of those going into a clinic - it is impossible to protest a clinic when you can barely be on the same block! The Bubble Bill strikes a perfect balance of protecting free speech and ensuring safe passage in and out of a health center.
Stay tuned as we keep working on this exciting piece of legislation!
Thanks for your support,
The Brown Democrats E-Board

Dems, 2009
To the wonderful Dems who missed reading our blog,
First, we want to apologize. Last semester, we all tried to spend every free moment (when we had a free moment, anyway) campaigning for PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA (yes, we still like writing that.) What a semester it was. The Democrats increased their majorities in the House and Senate, and we won back the White House! It was a really great opportunity for us to be out canvassing and on the phones, and I know we all share the that we were a part of Obama's historic victory.
But now that we have elected more Democrats, it is time to hold them accountable and make sure that they support the progressive values we care about. That means meeting our elected officials and lobbying them too.
We have already accomplished a great deal in the past few weeks. We met with Councilman Seth Yurdin and State Reps. Chris Fierro and David Segal. We learned about their priorities, and encouraged them to support ours'. We even authored our own legislation, the Bubble Bill, to protect women seeking access to health care facilities.
However, our work is not done yet. We need to push state legislators to support our Bubble Bill, ensure that Senate vacancies are filled by special elections, and reform the state's education system to improve equity and performance. And we need you all to help us. Come to our weekly meetings on Thursday at 8:00 in Wilson 101 to find out how you can lobby for these very important progressive priorities.
We hope to see you there!
Yours Truly,
Your Faithful Dems Executive Board

Another Year Down
To the Brown Dems that have made this semester (and year) so fantastic:
Since everyone is in the midst of finals period and preparing to go home for the summer (or, sadly, graduate), it is time for the final blog post of the school year.
First, CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS!! The board for next semester will be...
President - Harrison Kreisberg
Vice President - Lise Rahdert
Elections & Advocacy Chair - Raphaela DeGette Lipinsky
Speakers & Events Chair - Jeremy Feigenbaum
Civic Involvement Chair - Rajan Kothari
Secretary - Jared Stein
And, we should not forget, congratulations to President Emeritus Gabe Kussin for a great year and for being chosen to be the President of the College Democrats of Rhode Island!
We cannot wait to begin a new semester supporting our Democratic nominee and Democratic candidates throughout Rhode Island and New England. We will certainly have a very busy upcoming year, filled with opportunities to get involved and to hear from some very interesting speakers.
Also, our final event of the semester was a great hit. Congresswoman Diana DeGette spoke intelligently and passionately about the need for congresspersons to put science before politics. Her book will be coming out in August which, as she said with a smile, is certainly not a coincidence.
We hope that those of you still around next year will come to our first meeting with many ideas and thoughts about where you would like to see our chapter go. 2008 should be a great year for the democrats, and we hope you are as excited as we are to be a part of it.
Thank you for a great year,
The Outgoing Democratic E-Board

Hey Beloved Dems,
As many of you have your eyes glued to the TVs to find out the final results of the Pennsylvania primary, I thought I would remind you about our own upcoming elections.

Just to remind anyone interested, the open positions are President, Elections and Advocacy Chair, Civic Involvement Chair, and Secretary. Hope to see you all there!
Also, please bring yourselves and your friends to our upcoming lecture by Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-Co). You can see the blog entry below for more information, but it promises to be a fantastic event. We will let you know the results of our board elections as soon as it happens.

Going Out with Style
To the Wonderful Brown Democrats,
As most of you (aka, all of you) have realized, we have just one month left of school before going home for the summer. But before you all get to "enjoy" finals period, we have some really exciting events planned over the next week and a half.
First, I wanted to let you know that the Brown Democrats Pizza and West Wing Party we had for the propsective students at ADOCH (and a bunch of dems who showed up for the free food) was a huge success. It was great to see so many freshmen interested in being involved in our club. We cannot wait to see a huge outpouring of new members at the beginning of next semester.
Anyway, TOMMOROW NIGHT IS RELAY FOR LIFE. As our prez just said at the meeting, "Relay for life is one of the coolest things thats happens at Brown." Join the Brown Democrats in the fight against cancer at the main green friday night (from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. because cancer never sleeps). There will be movies, food, and entertainment, and you can help out a great cause. We definitely hope that you will join our team. E-mail gabriel_kussin@brown.edu for more information and to help raise some money (trust me, your parents will definitely give some money for the cause).
This coming THURSDAY, APRIL 24, AT 5:30 WILL BE OUR ELECTIONS. The positions of President, Civic Involvement Chair, and Secretary will all be open for election (although others might open if the officers run for new positions). Please come and feel free to run for a position (if you have any questions write to jeremy_feigenbaum@brown.edu). Even if you don't run, we would love for you to come and vote anyway.
Finally, a week from Monday, on APRIL 28, CONGRESSWOMAN DIANA DEGETTE (D-CO) WILL BE COMING TO SPEAK at Brown in Hunter Lab--Carmichael Auditorium. The lecture will be discussing Sex, Science, and Stem Cells: The Right Wing Assault on Reason. Tell your democratic friends, tell your friends who love science, tell everyone you know ... it is going to be a great event. If you are interested in tableslipping or ushering, email jeremy_feigenbaum@brown.edu.
Looking forward to seeing you all at these many, interesting events,
The Board

Our Upcoming Plans (no, not an april fools)
Hey Faithful Dems,
So now that Spring Break is past, and finals are creeping up (sorry, but it's true), we have one month to really have some fun and do some great events. Here's a roundup of what is to come.
April is the month for our Spring semester lectures! We are waiting to confirm everything, but it involves great speakers, congress, and a lot of fun...
Anyway, some things that I can tell you more about:
April 3 2008: This is our first meeting back, and you should definitely come! We will talk about raising money for Relay for Life, a really worthwhile cause. We will tell you more about our lectures. And we will start talking about ELECTIONS. We hope that you guys will all consider running for positions - as we can tell you, it is both fun and rewarding to be on Dems board.
April 10 2008: No meeting (you wouldn't come, it is almost spring weekend!)
Those are the big things for now, but more to come, I promise...
